Help for sexual abuse and sexual assault

You aren't alone

Unfortunately, sexual abuse is more common than many people think. It happens to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures and religions.  If you are a survivor of sexual abuse or sexual assault, we are here to support you.

Statistics measuring the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual abuse are difficult to measure because many victims do not report what happened to them. Of the studies conducted it has been estimated that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. However, many have called into question the lower estimates of boys as young boys and men are even less likely to report any kind of sexual abuse. Due to the greater likelihood of under-reporting, some in the field have estimated the statistic of male sexual abuse to be almost equal to girls.

Regardless of the gender of the victim, child sexual abuse often has devastating effects on the mental, emotional and physical health of the victim, many of which can last a lifetime.  If you are struggling to recover or cope after sexual abuse or being sexually assaulted, even years after the event, please reach out for help.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and sexual abuse or assault

The effects of sexual assault or child sexual abuse are traumatic and can cause symptoms of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms include:
  • Recurring intrusive memories
  • Avoidance of anything that may remind of the assault/abuse
  • Changes in thoughts or mood (depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts)
  • Increased fight or flight reactions (hypervigilance, irritability, anxiety, easily startled)

Treatment for sexual abuse and sexual assault

Sexual abuse and sexual assault often brings up feelings of intense shame and low self worth in addition to symptoms of PTSD. This can cause years of chronic stress and difficulty coping.

While the effects of sexual abuse and assault are substantial, treatment with a qualified therapist can help. It is understood that the sooner you receive treatment the better off you will be.

Therapy has the potential to help you avoid unhealthy coping strategies and self destructive behaviors.

How sexual abuse affects children

The relationship between the perpetrator and survivor of  assault has a substantial impact on the effects of trauma. Generally speaking, the closer the relationship, the more traumatic the experience.

When a trusted caregiver harms a child in this way it causes what attachment researchers have termed an
unresolvable distress in the child. This is because the person who is meant to protect the child is causing substantial harm to the child. The adult becomes both a source of terror and safety for the child.

This situation causes significant distress and a detrimental impact on the child’s ability to  cope.

If your child is suffering, we offer sensitive and age-appropriate assistance.
