Family Counseling

Family counseling a type of psychological counseling (psychotherapy) that helps family members improve communication and resolve conflicts.

It is usually most appropriate when there is conflict or tension between family members that needs to be resolved, with the end goal of relationships improving in the family.

Families are often called "systems", with different members of the family having different roles. All members of the family impact each other in one way or another, so having an understand of that dynamic is a critical approach in family counseling.
Signs your family may need family counseling:
  •  When your other children are unhappy, frightened or upset by a sibling’s behavior, or a parent’s response to that behavior.
  •  When the child’s behavior is interfering with his daily life, or the family’s functioning.
  •  When disagreements about how to handle a child’s problems put a strain on your marriage or partnership.
  •  When you, as a parent, don’t know what to do.

Family counseling can help you build and  improve difficult relationships with your children, resolve conflicts between parents and children, or guide your family towards healing from the devastating  impact of substance abuse within the family.
If you have a family member suffering from mental illness or addiction,  family counseling can help family members improve their coping skills.

In some cases, the family may participate in family counseling even if the ill or addicted person refuses treatment.

Having the family focus on healing and relationship--building, together, as a unit, can do wonders for the sense of unity and belonging that many splintering families struggle to create.
